Negotiation and the empowering 'No'

Negotiating and the empowering 'No'
Saying 'NO'

As a small business owner, negotiation is a vital skill that can have a significant impact on the trajectory of your success.

Drawing insights from Chris Voss’s "Never Split the Difference," we've spent some time digesting and understanding the strategic power of saying 'No' in negotiations. Contrary to popular belief, 'No' doesn’t always shut doors - it can be the start of a clearer and more meaningful discussion.

In the wise words of Warren Buffett, "The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything."

This is because it is important to recognise when the opportunity isn't right for you, when you need to prioritise your time to focus on other areas or when you need to set a clear boundary.

I challenge you to spend some time being clear with what you want to achieve this week. Then, where appropriate, try saying 'No' to requests, negotiations or tasks that don't support your goals - see how saying 'No' might just help you have a more successful and empowering week.

Whether it’s negotiating terms with suppliers or setting boundaries with clients, a well-placed 'No' can bring clarity and enhance decision-making.

Try these strategies to help you embrace your use of 'No'?

  1. No Without Fear - Recognise that 'No' is not a rejection but a clear statement of your boundaries. Accepting this can set you up to make decisions that are aligned with your business goals and values.

  2. Focus on Why's & How's - when you say 'No,' give a brief reason why you're saying no. This not only ensures understanding but also keeps the conversation productive, guides those involved in the conversation to another potential solution or option.

  3. Be Positive - frame your 'No' positively to maintain open communication. This ensures relationships remain strong and paves the way for future collaborations and opportunities.
